Ethnography Summary

Sometimes I conceive of empirical research can be too limited or simplistic in its approach as it tends to draw conclusions based on explicit, quantifiable statistics. However, ethnographic research brings into light the invisible, the unknown, and the unique--one that cannot be generalized across a larger population.
This is indeed an important aspect of Heath's ethnographic research, as it focuses on literacy practices and events in regional or nearby settings as opposed to literacy in general. This is what makes her work "unique" because it gives the reader an insight into the "item-by-item" ways in which members of Trackton and Roadville tell stories, read, write, and talk about texts.
Heath's profession, as an ethnographic study of literacy practices of two different communities, enables us--doctoral candidates--to see the importance of cultural factors in shaping literacy practices of a arrange of people.
Heath's ethnographic research localizes and particularizes literacy events and, as such, helps us see how differences in the ways in which members of Trackton and Roadville participate in literacy events are cultural, rather than cognitive. In other words, the meticulous ways in which the locals tell stories are specific to that culture; they serve the needs of the inhabitants. They should not be attributed to proper differences in understanding and learning about literacy.
I found her writing very accessable and her description--narrative--of literacy events graphic.
Questions:
1) How would Heath's narrative look like if she conducted the same ethnographic research today?
What would she include and exclude? How different would her interpretations be and how would they parallel to a narrative of another researcher who conducted the same study?
2) How much do our literacy practices at home compare to those in institutions? How does group class play a role in the divide between our home and institutional...

I am a marketing research adept for a packaged goods company. I need to find a training course in 2006 to begin learning more about the nuts and bolts of ethnographic research.
Are you looking for existent training or to back up your experiential knowledge with some sort of credential?
If you have not already had any formal xperience with ethnographic methods, I would *read* before taking a dispatch. Chances are you've been doing some forms of ethnography without identifying it as such. Your knowledge can easily be supplemented by reading some beneficent books. If you've been in marketing for a while, you'll see fairly quickly how to use the techniques described in the textbooks.
If you need some indisposed of credential to back up your knowledge, look to any local university/college. If they don't offer a course specifically in ethnography, look for a qualitative methods grade.
Ideally, you would like to find a university with a certificate program. I don't think there are any certificate programs in ethnography, per se, but you might be skilled to find one in research methods. Look for distance education programs, too, if you don't live in/near a "college community."
Good luck!
What is meant by "ethnographic research publication"?
please be as detailed as possible. Thanks!
My guesstimate is that your are required to do some research using ethnographic methods. This means researching a social phenomenon from the inside. For example, you could research Music Festivals by interviewing loads of people who have been. Alternatively, you could do the research by being part of a music holiday and engaging with and observing the people there. This would be an ethnographic approach. If you think about this you'll see that the two sets of data would be very different in content, and in reliability and validity.
I have old freemind but I need something for more extensive user research.
