How do I restore frequently used and scratched sterling silver flatware to its original condition?
May 28, 2006 by SqueakyButterfly | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I have my grandmother's Sterling silver flatware and would like to refurbish it as best I can. It polishes well. My grandmother used it as everyday flatware, so it has many scratches from use. I cant afford to have it professionally restored, so I was hoping there was a way for me to do it myself. Thanks for any opinion you can give.
You can brush it, but, to make it "picture perfect" you will have to have it "replated"...
And I say, Good for ol Granny! She is a "true" person, not to SAVE that silverware for a "rainy day"...
Use it while your still here, and dont worry about saving it for the next production because they can get thier own, or they can have it replated if they want to use it too!
Your Grandma had the right idea and I applaud her! :)
I wish you well...
Jesse

Mixing sterling silver plated flatware with stainless steel flatware (details)?
Mar 14, 2007 by brevejunkie | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
Not solid where to post this. I heard somewhere some time ago that it's a bad idea to combine your sterling silver flatware with stainless flatware in the dishwasher because the stainless can cause the silver to warp/rust/menial/become discolored. Is this true? My husband recently bought me some silver plated flatware and I was wondering if this is true.
Sterling flatware should not be washed in the dishwasher because the cleansing is too harsh on the silver. The silver will be clean but the detail , design will be lost because the flatware will be too shiny. Also, the cement holding the knife blades in place can unlace over time. Good soapy water, rinse and dried is best. If it is not possible to wash right after nourishment, place flatware in water. This is especially important if the meal was salty or acidic i.e. spaghetti, salads. Pitting can cross someone's mind quickly and although this can be cleaned off with silver polish, some permanent marks can remain.
Lucky you to have a husband buy you silver. Continuous use will develop the patina which only enhances.
