extra piece in oriental tea set?

i bought an oriental tea set recently. (the affable w/o handles) and there was an extra piece which i don't know the use of. it's small about 2 inches, the same color and design as the tea pot, has a negligible handle, and is smaller at the oppening than the middle. the tea set was made in Japan if that helps, may be hand painted, definatly antique. any ideas? i get these tea sets, but haven't come across one of these. i've only been doing it for a few years, so any advise in that area would be appreciated also. ( mostly all antiques) thanks so much!
